Union Design is the web portfolio for the company run by Jack Smith, a former colleague at UWE Students’ Union and someone who I have worked with many times in the past.
Following detailed discussion with Jack and running through design mock-ups in Adobe Photoshop, I took Jack’s designs and worked to create a web mock-up using HTML5 and CSS3 drawing as much as possible. Many of the shapes such as ribbons in the design are a pure CSS3 implementation.
I then worked to incorporate the design into a WordPress template and to create a complete WordPress website. I made use of the skeleton by simplethemes template as a base and worked with Jack throughout the implementation phase.
As part of the project, using openly available WordPress plugins such as ‘The Subtitle’ and ‘Post Gallery Slider’ and writing my own plugins, I was able to create dynamic project pages which needed minimal effort to create from Jack’s point of view. Adding thumbails and images into the page with a slider was as simple as uploading images to a post, and does not require custom tags or modifying code.
The site also has a responsive design, this site being the first time I had ever done a complete site responsively. The website works on a multitude of mobile devices without impacting on functionality.
I have also helped installed the phpList emailing system and have helped Jack with developing successful email newsletters.
